A Litany for Creative Souls
What if the saints aren't just people we admire — but friends who can accompany us in our creative lives?
Creativity can be wonderfully joyful, but it can also feel surprisingly lonely. Whether we're writing, painting, making music, cooking, designing, performing, or simply trying to make something beautiful, we can find ourselves wondering: Does this matter? Am I wasting my time? Is this self-indulgent? And how does this fit into my life with God?
In this episode, we explore the idea of creating a personal litany for your creative soul — a small group of saints whose lives, struggles, gifts, and virtues speak particularly to you.
Drawing on the wisdom of St Francis de Sales, we consider what it means to find saints whose lives we can appreciate and imitate, and whose intercession we can trust. Holiness doesn't require us to become somebody else. God invites us to become holy as the particular person He created us to be.
Saints for Creative Souls
We explore a number of saints and holy people who might become companions for different kinds of creative work:
Writers & poets: St John of the Cross, St Thérèse of Lisieux, and St Augustine
Visual artists: St Luke, Fra Angelico, and St Catherine of Bologna
Musicians: St Cecilia, St Hildegard of Bingen, and King David
Actors & performers: St Genesius and St Philip Neri
Filmmakers, photographers & storytellers: St Veronica and Blessed Carlo Acutis
Designers, makers & craftspeople: St Joseph and St Dunstan
Those who create through food & hospitality: St Martha and St Lawrence
Creative entrepreneurs: St Joseph and St Homobonus
But the episode isn't really about finding the right patron saint for your profession. The saints aren't categories, and creativity doesn't have to fit neatly into one either.
The deeper invitation is to find your people in heaven.
Your Personal Litany
Perhaps there is a saint you turn to when you're afraid.
A saint you need when you're procrastinating.
A saint who reminds you to keep going when your work is hidden.
A saint who helps you when you're tempted by vanity.
A saint who accompanies you when you're beginning something new.
Or a saint who reminds you, after you've received praise, where the gift came from in the first place.
Your personal litany doesn't have to be a perfect list. It might begin with just two or three names.
Start with your baptismal patron. Choose someone whose creative life resembles yours. Choose someone whose struggles resemble yours. Or choose someone who possesses a virtue you desperately need.
Read their life. Learn their story. Look at their work. Read their words. Talk to them. Ask them to pray for you.
The saints don't make us copies of themselves. They help us become more fully ourselves in Christ.
And perhaps that is the real gift of a personal litany: the reminder that we are not creating alone.
There are friends in heaven who have gone before us — and who are praying for us.
