Creating the Best Option

with Fr Michael Rossmann, SJ

What does it mean to create a meaningful life with God instead of constantly chasing the “perfect” option?

In this episode of The Creative Catholics Podcast, Alex sits down with Jesuit priest, author, teacher, and digital evangelist Fr. Michael Rossmann, SJ, for a thoughtful conversation about Catholic creativity, vocation, discernment, and the hidden spiritual life.

Drawing from Ignatian spirituality, Fr. Michael explores how creativity is deeply connected to the Catholic understanding of vocation — not simply in artistic work, but in the way we build relationships, commit to our calling, and co-create our lives with God.

One of the central ideas in this episode is Fr. Michael’s reflection on “creating the best option” instead of constantly looking over our shoulder wondering whether there is something better somewhere else. In a culture shaped by endless choices, comparison, and fear of commitment, he explains how freedom actually comes through rootedness, commitment, and giving ourselves fully to the life God is inviting us to build.

Alex and Fr. Michael discuss how this applies to:

  • marriage and relationships

  • priesthood and religious life

  • creative work and vocation

  • discernment and decision-making

  • Catholic family life

  • meaningful work

  • living faithfully in ordinary life

The conversation also dives deeply into Ignatian imagination, a form of prayer developed through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Fr. Michael explains how imaginative prayer helps Catholics encounter Scripture personally by placing themselves inside Gospel scenes and entering into relationship with Christ more fully.

Together, they explore the idea that God is not merely an abstract concept, but relationship itself — and how human longing for beauty, connection, creativity, and meaning ultimately points back toward our desire for communion with God.

Fr. Michael also shares insights from his work in campus ministry at Loyola University Chicago, where he has witnessed a surprising resurgence of interest in Catholicism among young adults — especially young men searching for stability, meaning, identity, and authentic community in an increasingly digital and fragmented culture.

The episode further explores:

  • Catholic creativity and faith

  • creativity as a path to holiness

  • Catholic creative living

  • social media evangelisation

  • digital ministry and online outreach

  • the loneliness of constant consumption

  • creating instead of endlessly consuming content

  • Catholic masculinity and identity

  • discernment in modern life

  • ordinary holiness and the hidden life

Alex and Fr. Michael also discuss Fr. Michael’s book Online Pre-Evangelization, introducing the idea of pre-evangelisation — the work of preparing hearts for deeper encounters with the Gospel before people are ready for formal theology or apologetics.

Rather than beginning with arguments or doctrine alone, pre-evangelisation starts with universal human longings: beauty, justice, relationship, creativity, meaning, and wonder. Fr. Michael explains how these longings can become bridges into deeper conversations about faith and the spiritual life.

The conversation also touches on Fr. Michael’s online ministry through his popular One Minute Homily videos and how short-form digital content can become a meaningful form of Catholic evangelisation when rooted in authenticity, clarity, and relationship.

Whether you are an artist, writer, homemaker, teacher, entrepreneur, parent, or simply someone trying to live a more faithful and creative Catholic life, this episode is an invitation to stop endlessly optimizing your life — and instead begin creating something meaningful with God.

This episode is especially for listeners interested in:
